Here is a comprehensive list of the pros and cons of living in the USA.
The pros of living in the USA
The United States of America will not be known as the land of opportunity for nothing. It offers a lot of job opportunities than any other country can. The country does not only offer a lot of job opportunities but it definitely pays better or higher compared to what you can make in other countries with the same job.
Whatever is the field that you are trying to find work, there is definitely one for you.
A lot of opportunities will come along the way if you are equipped with the right knowledge and skills for the job that you are targeting.
True enough, USA will never run out of opportunities to offer. It is a great starting point for those who are trying to establish their life and their career.
Furthermore, USA is also the perfect place where people can kickstart their businesses. Why? This is is because the country does not only offer a lot of job opportunities but it also has a very diverse market.
A diverse market means that there are a lot of businesses existing where you can establish connections for your own advantage. In the USA, almost any business in all fields exists.
I can say that the culture in the USA is not of the oldest origins but it is safe to say that it is the most glamorous of all cultures existing in the world.
The USA is the powerhouse of designers. Clothes as many signature brands origin in there.
There are a lot of brands such as Victoria Secret, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, and so much more. The clothing style generally varies. It depends on the status, region, occupation, or climate.
Regarding American food, the USA is worldly famous for different foods which include hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips, macaroni and cheese, and meatloaf. Aside from these foods, the country is also known for their cooking styles alongside the food that comes from different regions.
Southern-style cooking offers food such as fried chicken, collard greens, black-eyed peas, and cornbread; the southwest region is known for their chili and burritos and is very much known for foods loaded with beans and shredded cheese.
From the east to the west coast, the diversity of culture in the country gives everyone a warm welcome. The country houses many world famous places which mean that you are just a drive away from them and from everything you need.
The country also has different climate types and condition which means that you can choose which one is preferable for you.
The American people are very optimistic. Racial discrimination is almost not existing in the country. You will not be judged or treated differently for your skin color, race, nationality, preferences, and anything else. The people of USA are friendly and are welcoming.
(Of course there are some exceptions, but that happens anywhere).
You will be greeted by everyone with a big smile on their faces and of course, you will feel that you belong. The American people are very much known for their generosity as well.
They love to have fun as anyone else does which means that you will find them attending parties and functions every now and then.
The cons of living in the USA
1. Culture Shock
If you just moved to the USA, you might experience the so-called culture shock.
The culture shock you might experience might be mild or worst, it depends on how ready you are to live there. Culture shock is normal most especially when you just moved from a different place which is very far from where you used to live.
The neighbors you will have or the people in that place are different. It can be full of banal people that you just can't easily deal with.
This makes it important that you have done a lot of research on how it feels like living in the USA. Aside from this, you also have to find out if the neighborhood is as solid as you are.
Culture shock does not only talk about the neighborhood, but it could also be about the food, the community or anything else. At times, frustration might creep in. Living in the USA can be a cause of culture shock that is why you have to be ready for anything that comes along the way.
2. Work Ethics (competition)
Work ethics do exist in the USA of course. With the number of opportunities the country has to offer and with the number of applicants flocking in companies every single day, there is a chance that each position is replaceable at any given time.
Having this in mind, it is very important that right work standards are practiced and maintained in order for you to keep the job. Give it your best shot or else you will end up jobless.
The competition is tight too no matter how many jobs opportunities are available. Others might find this good but others might find this a disadvantage.
Most employees have a lot of dreams and want their efforts to be recognized while others might be exposed to a harder working condition which makes it challenging to practice work ethics at all time. In the USA, you have to work hard and be very dedicated in order to keep the job.
3. Cost of moving into the Country
Lastly, moving into the USA is expensive. Especially when it is an international moving.
Bringing your belonging alone is already expensive and risky at the same time.
When moving in alone, utmost care should be observed most especially that you have a lot of things that you will be bringing along. If you are thinking about bringing it with you over the plane, that would cost you too much which makes shipping your stuff the best option.
There are really a lot of things that you should consider when you are moving into the USA.
It is a long and enduring process at that which isn't cheap at all. Another thing that should also be considered is the place where you are going to live. Make sure you can find a good and affordable place for you and your family.
The country is huge and there are a lot of different places you can pick.
Years ago, I came to Miami with my family so in general I have more experience living in this city and I share some of this experience in my article How is life in Miami. I recommend you to read it to have a better idea about this place.
It is not just about the cost but of course, the process itself can be pretty rough as entering the country isn't that easy due to all legalization process. Make sure you have the right VISA before get into a plane. Read the article US Visa Types for more information.
If you are coming to the country with an work visa, I definitely have extra information for you in my other article How to get an L1 visa to work in the USA where I describe my own process of getting a VISA to work in the US.
